Araçari-Banana – Baillonius bailloni

O Araçari-Banana é uma espécie de tucano facilmente reconhecido por seu enorme bico, espécie nativa da Mata Atlântica, foi introduzida em outras regiões e atualmente pode ser encontrado em vários lugares do litoral da América do Sul desde o nordeste do Brasil até á Argentina.
Seu tamanho é mediano, com cerca de 36 cm de comprimento, as fêmeas e os machos são bem parecidos, exceto pelo diferença no comprimento do bico, que na fêmea é quase um terço menor do que no macho, os dois têm uma  coloração amarelo inconfundível.
Tem hábitos diurnos, vive em regiões de Mata Atlântica montanhosas, em zonas de floresta úmida, preferindo principalmente camadas médias e altas da vegetação, voa em bandos de sete a dez indivíduos, é social e bastante gregária,  move-se através da selva em busca de alimento, que consiste de: frutos, insetos e eventualmente comem ovos e filhotes de outras aves, possuem um voar rápido e veloz a curtas distâncias, mas evitam vôos muito longos.
Fazem seus ninhos em buracos de árvores e cupinzeiros, eventualmente aproveitam o ninho já feito anteriormente por outras aves como o pica-pau, onde põe de dois a quatro pequenos ovos. Quando estão com ovos ou filhotes são super cautelosos, o que dificulta a descoberta do ninho.
Estão cada vez mais raros de se encontrar por causa da coleta, tráfico de animais silvestres e a destruição de seu habitat natural.

Saffron Toucanet – Baillonius bailloni

The Saffron-Toucanet is an easily recognized species of Toucan for its enormous peak. A native species of the Atlantic Forest, it was introduced in other regions, and can currently be found in several  places of the coast of South America , from  the northeast of Brazil to  Argentina.
It’s average size ,  about 36 cm long, and  both he-toucans and she-toucans  are very similar, except for the difference in the length of the peak, which in the she-toucan is almost one third smaller than  in the he-toucan, being both  yellow-colored ,making it very difficult to be mistaken.
It has daytime habits, living in mountainous regions of the Atlantic Forest, in humid zones of the forest, mainly favouring average and high layers of vegetation. It flies in flocks of seven to ten , is sociable and gregarious, moves  throughout the forest in  search of food, consisting of: fruits, insects and eventually  eggs and baby birds of other species; it can  fly very  fast and very quickly small distances, avoiding very long flights.
It makes its nests in holes of trees and termite trees, eventually using existing nests of  other birds, such as the woodpeckers’, where it may lay  two to  four small eggs. When they are with eggs or babies, they are extra careful, which makes it more difficult to find a nest.
The toucans have become scarce to spot, mainly due to collection, traffic of wild animals and the destruction of their natural habitat.
