Bico-grosso – Saltator maxillosus

Também conhecido em algumas regiões pelos nomes de: Trinca-ferro-bicudo, Tempera-viola, Botió, esta espécie chama a atenção pelo bico muito grosso, alto e amarelo na base, tem partes superiores cinza-escura e algumas partes esverdeadas, sobrancelha branca iniciando-se na base do bico, tem tamanho aproximado de 19 cm.
Esta espécie alimenta-se basicamente de grão, possuem um acerta predileção por frutos da imbaúba, e na época da reprodução também consomem larvas e insetos.
Durante a reprodução vivem estritamente em casais, são bastante territorialistas, constroem os ninhos em forma de taça a pouca altura, a incubação dura em torno de 14 dias.
Vivem na orla da mata em plantas baixas e pequenos arbustos, principalmente nas altas serras do Sudeste do Brasil, podemos encontrá-los no Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul e leste da Argentina.

Thick-billed Saltator – Saltator maxillosus

Also known in some regions by the names of:” Trinca-ferro-bicudo”, “Tempera-viola” and “Botió”, this species calls the attention for the very thick and high beak and yellow base. Its upper parts are dark grey and some parts are greenish, with white eyebrows beginning at the base of the beak. It is approximately 19 cm long.
This species feeds basically on grain. They prefer fruit of the imbaúba tree, and when breeding they also eat larvae and insects.
When mating, they live strictly in pairs. They are extremely territorialists. They build their nests in the shape of a drinking cup, not very high. Incubation lasts about 14 days.
They live in the edge of the forest, in low plants and small shrubs, mainly in the high mountain ranges in the southeastern of Brazil. We can find them in Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande Do Sul and east of Argentina.
